Special slide presentation on Amelia Earhart

(Press Release) — The Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument Inc. Group is hosting a special slide presentation on Amelia Earhart at the Joeten-Kiyu Library today, Sept. 14, Friday, at 3:30 p.m.

Marie S.C. Castro

Local author and officer of the local chapter of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument Inc., Marie Soledad Camacho Castro, will be on hand for the event.

She is the author of “Without a Penny in my Pocket: My Bittersweet Memories Before and After WWII.”

The video presentation features Saipan’s Chamorro elders who saw Amelia Earhart on Saipan during 1937, an important historic event most on Saipan do not know and should welcome as part of local historical resources.

Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan became the first Americans to circumnavigate across the Pacific but the flight ended her aviation career rather tragically on Saipan, Castro said.

She urges everyone to join in the undertaking by becoming familiar with this piece of unknown history on Saipan that affected the  Pacific, the U.S. and the rest of world.

Admission is free of charge, and everyone in the community is invited to the event.

There will also be time for discussion on a local movement to build a memorial monument in honor of these two American heroes.
