Governor to discuss Kan Pacific pool with DPL

GOVERNOR Ralph Torres on Thursday said he will meet with the Department of Public Lands secretary to discuss the  Kan Pacific pool in Marpi that is to close by the end of the month.

Kan Pacific also owns Mariana Resort & Spa whose land lease agreement with the CNMI government has expired.

Local sports groups, young swimmers and other members of the community are asking the CNMI government to “help to save the Marpi pool.”

“I am meeting with the DPL secretary,” the governor told Variety. “Kan Pacific has said that they will be leaving the property by Sept. 30, so we will see what we can do after that date,” he added.

“We are now weighing our options — whether to maintain the property…or shut it down and hire security to protect the assets, or have a private company run the property. We will determine the next step after my meeting with the DPL secretary.”

The Northern Marianas Sports Association, the NMI Swimming Federation and the 2021 Pacific Mini Games Oversight Committee have asked the governor not to allow the closure of the island’s only Olympic-sized swimming pool.

There is also an online petition urging the CNMI government “to maintain the pool”: https://chn.ge/2MLlAVx
