Saipan mayor’s field workers clear roads after flashflood

THE Saipan mayor’s office field personnel worked until evening to remove runoff sediment and debris in Chinatown following a heavy downpour on Friday.

Field operation director Joann Aquino said they worked to clear the area from 2 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to ensure that the roads, particularly As Falape  and Commonwealth Drive, were passable and safe again.

“Our crew members had to be there after work hours to remove the debris and sediment from the water runoff,” she said.

She added that they used a dump truck and skid loader to remove the debris.

They were able to collect 14 truckloads of sediment and debris, she added.

Whenever there’s a downpour, there is flooding on certain roads and they end up covered with aggregate washed down from higher areas.

At one residence, Aquino said they had to use sandbags to prevent floodwater from getting onto the driveway.
