Project M to offer free fitness classes

THE Physical Activity Council, established under the Non-Communicable Disease Bureau of the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.- Division of Public Health, is launching Project M which aims to eliminate the risks of non-communicable diseases through physical exercises.

The council’s chairwoman, Samantha Birmingham-Babauta, said Project M activities will start on Oct. 11 in three places: the parking lot of Systems of Care in San Antonio; the Koblerville Youth Center; and the Dandan Middle School baseball field.

“Project M stands for ‘metgut’ in Chamorro and ‘mamaw’ in Carolinian, and both mean ‘strong,’ ” she said. “After the establishment of the Physical Activity Council, we talked about how we can  get people to move and be more active.”

She said Project M will provide free exercise classes. “It is for the beginner level. Our target audience includes those who have never worked out before and just want to move.”

The goal is to bring physical activities to the villages so people will have access to free workouts, she added.

She said gym membership fees, lack of transportation,  lack of parks or sidewalks in the villages are among the “barriers” for people who want to be healthier.

Birmingham-Babauta said she will conduct the fitness class, but she’s hoping that other fitness professionals and/or trainers will also join Project M.

“This will be a pilot program that is intended to jumpstart one’s New Year goals.  A lot of people say they want to be healthier and lose weight. For this pilot program, we will  analyze what is effective, what  we need to change, and what the more popular locations are for fitness classes. And we will analyze all this information and come back with a long-term program.”

Asked what to expect in the 45-minute fitness class she will conduct, she said: “It will be like a boot camp.”

She advised participants to bring their own water and either a yoga mat or beach towel — something they can use for the floor exercises.

The schedule of the free fitness classes:

  • • Systems of Care parking lot — Oct. 11, Nov. 1, Nov. 29, Dec. 20
  • • Koblerville Youth Center — Oct. 18, Nov. 8. Dec. 6
  • • Dandan Middle School Baseball field — Oct. 25, Nov. 15, Dec. 13.

All classes will start at 5 p.m. and end at 5:45 p.m.
