Body of homeless man found near 13 Fishermen Memorial

THE body of a homeless 64-year-old man was found near the 13 Fishermen Memorial in Garapan on early Tuesday morning.

The Department of Public Safety said it received a call at 5:32 a.m. about a deceased person near the beach area.

DPS public information officer Jackie Rae said responding officers found a “male victim laying face up by a coconut tree, north of the 13 Fishermen pavilion.”

She said the victim was unresponsive and in an advanced state of rigor mortis.

“The 64-year-old victim was discovered by his companion who says they arrived on island on Sept. 27, 2018, but had not established a permanent address,” Rae said.

The victim sustained an abrasion on the back of the head and on both knees, Rae added.

Asked about the incident, DPS Commissioner Robert Guerrero said the victim was a Caucasian man, and that there was no sign of trauma.

Rae said medics transported the body to Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. where investigators learned that the victim was taking several medications for heart and kidney disease, and had consumed alcohol.

According to Rae, hospital personnel pronounced the victim dead at 6:43 a.m.

The cause of death is still under investigation, she said.

Rae said the man’s name will not be released because the victim›s next of kin have not yet been notified.
