Fil-Am community hosts appreciation party for GOP candidates

MEMBERS of the Filipino-American community on Saipan hosted an appreciation party for local Republican Party candidates led by Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres, Senate President Arnold I. Palacios and Rep. Angel A. Demapan on Sundayat the Civic Center in Susupe.

In an interview, the governor said the gathering was very significant as it reflected the partnership between the CNMI government and the Filipino-American community.

“This is also an acknowledgement that the administration will continue working with them,” the governor added.

He noted that when he was Senate president, he drafted the CNMI Senate’s position that expressed support for the granting of a long-term status to qualified long-time guest workers.

“I’m glad that other elected officials such as [U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan] also supported our proposal for long-term status,” Torres added.

In 2011, he said, there were only a few Filipino-American workers on island.

“We supported long-term status then because we wanted to do the right thing — we were not politicizing the issue. This is not just for our economic growth but about families,” the governor added.

In his remarks, Rep. Angel Demapan, who is running for U.S. Congress, said: “Enough of empty promises. It’s time to work really hard in D.C. to make them come true.”

The other Republican candidates also expressed appreciation to their Filipino-American supporters.
