LEO Pangelinan is the new executive director of the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, board chair Polly Masga said.

Pangelinan succeeds Scott Russell who retired in September after 17 years of serving the council.

In an email to Variety, Masga said Pangelinan will officially start as the new executive director on Nov. 5.

“Together with the full board, we are all excited to have Leo join our council as our new executive director.  With Leo’s extensive management experience and his passion for the humanities, we believe he can lead our council to greater heights and move in a positive direction,” Masga said in a statement.

Humanities Council board member Frankie Eliptico said the interview and recruitment process for the position was rigorous.

In an earlier interview, Masga said there were seven individuals who applied for the position.

“Leo brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and humanities advocacy to his new position as executive director of Humanities Council,” said Eliptico, who is also the interim president of  Northern Marianas College.

“We are excited to have him lead the Humanities Council and we look forward to seeing great things from his leadership,” Eliptico added.

Pangelinan used to be the dean for student services at NMC. He worked at the college for 10 years.

In July, he was appointed managing director of the Okeanos Marianas Foundation which aims to develop local capacity for fossil-fuel-free sea transportation, traditional sailors, boat builders and business operators.
