Tropical disturbance could impact Marianas by midweek

(CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management) —  Based on information received from the National Weather Service on Guam, a tropical disturbance is currently located just north of Pohnpei about:

1,060 miles east-southeast of Saipan;

1,060 miles east-southeast of Tinian;

1,065 miles east-southeast of Rota;

1,075 miles east-southeast of Guam; and

1,155 miles southeast of Pagan.

The disturbance is the subject of a tropical cyclone formation alert from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. It is moving slowly westward and is expected to strengthen as it approaches the Marianas early this week.

There is considerable uncertainty as to the exact track and strength of the system. Current computer model guidance has come into better agreement that the center should track near or north of Saipan on Wednesday or Thursday.

Therefore, Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres is advising residents of Saipan, Tinian and Rota to stay informed about the latest forecasts and statements which will be available through local media sources and the NOAA weather radio broadcast on 162.5 megahertz.
