No ‘In Memoriam’ ceremony this year

THIS year’s annual memorial service to honor the civilian casualties of World War II on Saipan and the Northern Islands has been canceled.

LJ Castro

Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Luis John Castro said the “In Memoriam” ceremony would have been held at American Memorial Park on Oct. 25, a day after Super Typhoon Yutu hit Saipan.

The municipal council, which spearheads the annual memorial services, initially decided to move  the event to Oct. 29.

“Everything was set and ready but we have to cancel the program,” Castro said, noting the damage sustained by the memorial park.

Also damaged was the municipal council’s temporary office at the leadership memorial courtyard or kiosko in Chalan Kanoa.

In Aug. 2015, the municipal council’s office adjacent to the U.S. Post Office was destroyed by Typhoon Soudelor.

Castro said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has already allocated funding for the construction of a new municipal council building.
