Farmers market in Garapan remains closed

THE CNMI Farmers Cooperative Association’s farmers market at Garapan Fishing Base will remain closed until further notice, its manager Leroy Pangelinan said.

Although the facility did not sustain major damage, he said they had to sell or give away their vegetables, fruit and frozen products.

“We offered some of them to our vendors, mostly hotels, at a reduced price. We also donated some to the hospital.”

Pangelinan said they need power for their freezer since most of their products are perishable.

“So without power we cannot open our business yet,” he added.

Based on their experience, Pangelinan said it could take four months before they start getting fresh fruits and vegetables from farmers.

He said Typhoon Yutu critically affected the agricultural plots on Saipan and Tinian, but they are still hoping to get some supplies from Rota, especially root crops.
