NMC board chair: Recovery is priority

NORTHERN Marianas College is prioritizing recovery and will create a presidential search committee once the damage assessment is completed, NMC Board of Regents Chairman Charles Cepeda said.

“We were in the process of getting information and guidelines [from the Association of Community College Trustees] when the typhoon hit Saipan. The search committee will be created…after the damage assessment of the college,” he added.

He said the board is currently not ready to appoint members of the presidential search committee.

In a recent meeting, the board unanimously ratified the appointment of Frankie Eliptico as NMC interim president.

Eliptico was named interim president on Aug. 22  after then-NMC President Carmen Fernandez informed the board that she would not seek the renewal of her two-year employment contract which ended in October.

“The board needed to ratify that he is interim president,” Cepeda said, referring to Eliptico. “The board needed to officially put it on the agenda, vote on it, and act on it. To ratify, basically, means that the entire board and not just the chairman approved his appointment as interim president.”

Cepeda said Eliptico will be the interim president until such time that the board chooses a new president.

“I believe that we, as the board of regents, have confidence in Mr. Eliptico because we have seen him work with the NMC team. He has worked closely with the management team, including the administrators, faculty and staff. I work with him directly and he has been open to receiving ideas and suggestions,” Cepeda said.
