‘Veterans are the backbones of communities’

VETERANS are the backbones of communities especially in the Marianas where some of them hold leadership positions in the local and federal governments as well as private businesses, according to Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, commander of Joint Region Marianas.

“Thomas Paine once said, those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the fatigue of supporting it. My fellow veterans, many of you have experienced that burden and the weariness of war to bring about peace,” Chatfield said in her Veterans Day keynote address at American Memorial Park on Monday.

She added, “Whether in the jungles of Vietnam of the deserts in Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ve set the example and created the legacy that inspired so many to raise their hand in voluntary service to the United States.”

Chatfield said many inspiring stories have been told and shared about veterans, their experiences in the battlefield, their sacrifices and courage.

“And if there is anything that our veterans can teach us is that there is no threat that  we cannot meet, there is no challenge that we cannot overcome. As we remember all our honorable veterans, we must not forget our families — the strength and pillar of our armed forces. As it is with our island culture, our families are our driving force.”

In his remarks, Gov. Ralph D.L.G. Torres   said he could not thank enough the veterans and servicemembers for all their sacrifices and hard work they have done for the community.

“I just want you to know that we truly appreciate your sacrifices and your family’s sacrifices. You all came here for one mission, to help us restore our lives, you are here as one family and one Marianas,” he added.

Among the veterans who attended Monday’s ceremony at American Memorial Park were Reps Larry Deleon Guerrero and Angel Demapan.

Also in attendance were Chief Justice Alexandro Castro, Teresa Kim Tenorio, Judge Kenneth Govendo, former Judge David Wiseman, Senate President Arnold Palacios, and former Rep. Tina Sablan on behalf of U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.
