MVA official: Start planning for Lunar New Year Party

MARIANAS Visitors Authority board member Jerry Tan urged organizers of the Lunar New Year Party to start planning for the event.

“This is one of the most important festivals for Koreans and Chinese,” he said, referring to the CNMI’s two largest tourism markets.

The Lunar New Year in 2019 is on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

In a recent MVA board meeting, Tan emphasized the importance of MVA’s involvement in the event, saying that last year’s launching of the Lunar New Year festivities on island was very successful.

“I think we need to look ahead and see what we need to do,” Tan told the MVA management headed by Managing Director Chris Concepcion.

He said MVA should “be proactive” in planning for the festival. “How can we start early? We should do something now,” he added.

Tan said the event will help boost the Chinese and Korean tourism markets.

Variety was unable to get a comment from the Lunar New Year Party committee headed by Charles Cepeda.

Concepcion said the committee has not approached MVA yet, but he can initiate discussions with the festival organizers.

He said MVA would prefer the Chinese and Korean communities to spearhead the event, with MVA playing a supporting role.

In February last year, the Lunar New Year Party  featured the Shanghai Sinma Acrobatic Troupe and various Chamorro and Carolinian cultural practitioners and specialists.
