San Vicente school to re-open on Dec. 10

SAN Vicente Elementary School will resume classes on Monday, Dec. 10, and will run a half-day session, principal Paulette Sablan said.

SVES still has no power but it   has a generator and water supply, she added.

“We are still clearing debris to make sure that children are safe and our classrooms are ready to welcome them back,” she said on Wednesday.

She added that school counselors are also working with teachers so they can focus on the children’s social and emotional needs.

“That will be the focus for the first week. We will help the children cope and adjust to the changes.”

She said teachers have  developed a lesson plan that will provide activities for children to help overcome the trauma of the disaster.

As of Wednesday, Sablan said 11 students were withdrawn from the school. “Some parents decided to relocate off-island. Some children relocated with their families to other areas of Saipan, and their parents decided to transfer them to a school near them.”

Before Typhoon Yutu, SVES had a student population of about 650, the second largest among elementary schools on Saipan.
