NMI fire department to get new ambulances, radios from FEMA

DEPARTMENT of Fire and Emergency Medical Services commissioner Clyde K. Norita said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has purchased four new ambulances and 40 new handheld radios for DFEMS.

Three  of the new ambulances are for Saipan and one is for Tinian whose ambulance was damaged when Typhoon Yutu hit both islands in October, Norita said.

The company making the ambulances went into production in November and the new vehicles are expected to arrive in early 2019, he added.

FEMA also bought 40 handheld radios for Saipan’s fire department.

“We only have 20 radios and they are over 15 years old. FEMA bought us 40 new radios. FEMA saw the need and filled the need,” Norita said.

In addition, the fire department is  expecting two new fire pumper trucks capable of holding 1,000 gallons of water. “The contract was recently signed and production time is about 280 days,” Norita said.
