Next Senate president: Hocog

OUTGOING Lt. Gov. and Sen.-elect Victor B. Hocog will be the president of the 21st Senate which will be inaugurated on Jan. 14, 2019.

Victor Hocog

The Rota lawmaker also served as Senate president in the 18th Legislature. He became lt. governor after then-Lt. Gov. Ralph Torres succeeded Gov. Eloy Inos who passed away in Dec. 2015.

Recently, Hocog and the five other Republican senators held a caucus to discuss the leadership positions.

Hocog asked the other five members if they were interested in the presidency. No one showed interest, and all agreed to support Hocog.

Sen. Jude Hofschneider of Tinian will be the next vice president while Sen. Justo Quitugua of Saipan is the next floor leader.

Sen. Sixto Igisomar of Saipan was chosen as the next legislative secretary.

Hocog will succeed Senate President Arnold Palacios who was elected lt. governor in November.

In a phone interview, Hocog  thanked his colleagues for their vote of confidence and for trusting him again to lead the Senate.

He said he will work with everybody just as he did in the 18th Legislature.

In a separate interview, Hofschneider said the committee chairs will be announced on  inauguration day.

The 21st Senate will have three independent members: Sens. Paul Manglona and Terry Santos of Rota and Sen.-elect Vinnie Sablan of Saipan.
