Mobile-home bill ‘misinterpreted,’ says lawmaker

THE Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation last week did not act on Rep. John Paul Sablan’s House Local Bill 20-66 which proposes to allow mobile-home units on Beach Road.

Sablan said there are a lot of misinterpretations about the bill, saying some lawmakers who are opposed to it thought the mobile homes cannot withstand strong winds.

“They thought these are structures with tires. No. Of course it has to meet the requirements of the federal and local building codes. It has to be mounted and it will have foundations, too. It can withstand strong winds. It has to be built strongly just like a concrete structure. This is a new idea for a resort with very beautiful designs. It will look attractive and could be another tourist attraction on our island,” Sablan said.
