Speaker declares House seat vacant, asks governor to call for special election

SPEAKER Blas Jonathan “BJ” Attao has officially declared the Precinct 3 seat of the late Rep. Frank Dela Cruz vacant and asked Gov. Ralph Torres to call for a special election.

Dela Cruz was re-elected in November, but he passed away on Jan. 6, eight days prior to the inauguration of the new Legislature.

With more than one half of his two-year term of office remaining, the Constitution mandates that a special election will be held to fill the vacancy, 30 days after the seat has been declared vacant.

In his letter to the governor, Attao stated that the late Rep. Dela Cruz would want his constituents in Precinct 3 to be fully represented.

“The Hon. Representative Frank Dela Cruz was a model statesman, a staunch and articulate advocate and a very well-respected colleague,” Attao said. “Above all, Rep. Frank, as he was fondly known, was a true public servant and his presence in the House will be greatly missed.”

The speaker also congratulated the governor and the Lt. Gov. Arnold Palacios, adding that he looks forward to a productive working relationship with the administration as they work together toward full recovery from Typhoon Yutu.
