Lawmaker’s widow touched by tribute

THE widow of the late Rep. Frank Dela Cruz said the kind words and praises for her husband have somewhat eased their pain,  and made her and her children  feel better.

Lisa Dela Cruz, her children, grandchildren and her husband’s siblings were in the House chamber on Tuesday to attend the memorial tribute organized by the Legislature and the governor’s office to honor the late Rep. Frank Dela Cruz who was a member of the 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th Legislatures.

Dela Cruz was re-elected in November but passed away eight days before the inauguration of the 21st Legislature.

In an interview, Mrs. Dela Cruz, she said she and her four children — Divana, Deveney, Dana and Damien — truly appreciated the honor that CNMI officials have accorded to her husband.

“We are really touched. Hearing good words about him somehow eases the pain and makes us feel better. We are so proud of him and so grateful to the people who have showed love and respect to him. We are so grateful to everyone,” she told Variety.

She, her children and her husband’s other family member spent some time in  the late Rep. Frank Dela Cruz office’s at the House of Representatives after the memorial tribute.

The Legislative Bureau allowed the family to bring home his desk chair as a souvenir.

The House, the Senate and the governor presented commemorative resolutions to the Dela Cruz family.

Also attending the memorial tribute were former lawmakers who served with Dela Cruz in previous Legislatures. Among them was former Rep. Ray Tebuteb who described Dela Cruz as “a very good friend.”

He and Dela Cruz served Precinct 3.

“The best word to describe him is statesman. He was the kind of person who spoke on issues and didn’t take disagreements personally. He was respectful and very passionate. I am going to miss him,” Tebuteb said.

Dela Cruz was laid to rest on Saturday at the Chalan Kanoa Cemetery. He died of a heart attack on Jan. 6, 2019 while on Tinian where he was helping in the recovery efforts. He was 56.
