GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres said he will appoint Tinian businessman and former municipal council member Philip Mendiola-Long to fill Tinian’s vacant seat on the Board of Education.

The governor has also accepted the courtesy resignation of former Speaker Jose Lifoifoi from the Commonwealth Ports Authority board.

In an interview, Torres  said Mendiola-Long is qualified to serve on the BOE. There was no candidate for Tinian’s BOE seat in the November elections.

In a legal opinion, Attorney General Edward Manibusan said the governor can fill the vacancy.

As for Lifoifoi, who has been a CPA board member for 16 years and chairman for 14, Torres said the former speaker needs to take care of his health issues.

The six other board members of the CPA are chairwoman Kimberlyn King-Hinds,  vice chairman Roman Tudela, former Sen. Thomas Villagomez, Barrie Toves, Joseph Diaz and former Sen. Pete Reyes.

The governor said he expects to receive the transition team’s final report and recommendations, which he will review  before making changes to his cabinet.

He earlier asked his cabinet members and other appointed officials to submit their courtesy resignations.
