Sen. Sablan wants ‘open channel of communication’ with CUC

SENATOR Vinnie F. Sablan, chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications, wants to make sure that he is well-informed about the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. “so we can draft bills that will be effective and benefit not only CUC but the people as well,” the senator said on Thursday when he attended a CUC board meeting with Sen. Frank Cruz.

If possible, the senator said he will attend every CUC board meeting. He will also ask CUC managers and board members to attend his committee meetings, the first of which is set for Feb. 19.

Sablan said it is important to maintain an “open channel of communication” between his committee and CUC.

“It is also very crucial that the community is aware what our plans are,” he added.

Sablan, who used to work for CUC as a laboratory assistant then technician for over 10 years, said he is “very thankful and honored to be here to see how I can help.”

Sablan is hoping that CUC will pursue its plan to have an underground power distribution system.

He added that the project will require a significant amount of funding and may take years to complete, but he said it is important for CUC to secure its system against future typhoons.

Sablan said he also plans to talk with Gov. Ralph DLG Torres regarding the Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission, which has been inactive since 2017 due to lack of members.
