CUC: 6 to 10-hour power outages every day for 2 months

THE Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is implementing “very extensive power outages” on Saipan as part of the restoration effort, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said.

The power outages in various locations on island will last from six to 10 hours every day over the course of two months, he added.

Although some mitigation work has already been done, Camacho said CUC will continue replacing  wooden power poles with concrete ones.

“The restoration is definitely not complete but we have already accomplished for the most part the other main objective which is to restore power to our customers.”

Some customers on Saipan also need to replace the recycled materials that were temporarily installed to fast-track the restoration of power, he added.

CUC expects to get more conductors, transformers, hardware and other materials to replace recycled materials, Camacho said.

To reduce the impact of the scheduled power outages on the water supply, he said they will use generators at their water pump stations.

“But the water supply will definitely be affected and other services will be limited during the power outages,” he added.

“Our objective is to energize our customers, change the recycled materials to pre-storm condition, and to have efficient distribution of power supply,” Camacho said.
