Clayton, president of Exquisite Productions Marianas LLC, said the beauty pageant is for a great cause — the preservation of the environment.

The theme for the islands’ first ever Miss Earth pageant is “Flora.” The pageant will be held on Saturday, June 22, starting at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt.

Exquisite Productions Marianas vice president and director Rosalyn A. Ajoste said other titles will include Miss Earth Photogenic, Miss Friendship, Miss Earth Environment, the People’s Choice, Best in Swimsuit, Best in Native Costume and Best in Evening gown.

The winners will receive trophies, sashes and cash prizes.

Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang, who led the pinning of the sashes on the candidates, said his office will provide assistance including logistics to the pageant and its related activities.

The mayor said the pageant is in line with his office’s environmental awareness programs

His field operations director Joann Aquino, one of the pageant directors, said the candidates will visit schools to promote environment awareness.

Ajoste said the Miss Earth pageant is an international environmental event launched in 2001 to actively promote and get involved in the preservation and protection of the environment and  Mother Earth. The winner serves as an “ambassador to environmental protection campaigns worldwide.”
