Amelia Earhart an inspiration for Women’s Month, says Marie Castro

THE Committee of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Monument Inc. on Saipan has joined the Lady Diann Torres Foundation in celebrating Women’s Month.

Committee vice president Marie S. C. Castro said thanks to Earhart, women progressed in the “Golden Age of Aviation” in the 1930s. “Amelia educated the world about the great untapped potential of women in all walks of life,” Castro added.

“If a woman is more capable in a particular instance, why can’t she have an opportunity to prove it?” Castro quoted Earhart as saying.

Castro said the women of Saipan should recognize and honor the accomplishments of Earhart who opened the door for all women to demonstrate their potential and abilities in male-dominated industries.

“It was through Amelia Earhart’s inspiration that women today can often be found in the forefront doing a man’s job,” Castro said.

In recognizing Earhart as the first American woman pilot “who so exemplified the fearless spirit of adventure that characterized the early aviation pioneer,” Castro and her group continues to encourage the community to support their proposed project to build a memorial monument for Earhart.

“Let us finally join in expressing our appreciation by building a memorial monument on Saipan, where she met her tragic fate,” she added.
