THE Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance program had received 1,146 applicants for the spring term as of Feb. 24, 2019, program administrator Merissa Rasa said.

Of the total applications, 1,001 are still pending, 13 have been denied and 132 have been approved.

In her report to the SHEFA board, Rasa said there are 144 new applicants, 923 ongoing recipients and 79 returning applicants.

She said 706 applicants have enrolled in the CNMI, 347 are studying abroad, 93 are taking online courses, and 17 want to study at the Northern Marianas Trades Institute.

Rasa said 528 of the applicants are college freshmen; 236, sophomores; 184, juniors; 73, seniors; 98 are taking a master’s degree; and 27, advanced doctorate or juris doctorate.

Of the total applicants, 20 are taking a certificate course; 483, an associate degree; and 519, a bachelor’s degree.

There are 223 high school graduates in 2018 who availed themselves of the scholarship program.

Rasa said the deadline for the submission of supporting documents is April 12.

She also reported to the SHEFA board that they have granted Northern Marianas College’s request to extend the SHEFA application deadline for spring.

“The SHEFA program stands ready to collaborate with the college and provide the necessary facilitation and resources needed to ensure the success of the program and most importantly the success of our student participants,” she added.

SHEFA gets an annual funding of about $3 million from Saipan’s poker license fee collections.
