CUC to explore Saipan-Tinian submersible distribution power system

COMMONWEALTH Utilities Corp. Executive Director Gary Camacho said they are looking into the possibility of a submersible cable for power distribution on Saipan and Tinian.

In a recent meeting with the CUC board, Camacho discussed the proposed 42-mile submersible cable project of the U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.

He said the cost will be at least $1 billion for the project’s electrical system alone.

CUC is determined to pursue a proposed $30 million expansion of its underground power network on Saipan and Tinian, Camacho said.

“We are at the conceptual planning stage now,” Camacho said, adding that CUC received technical assistance from the project from the U.S. Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority.

“They have a lot of experience, and we’ve created this relationship with them so they’re now providing us with a lot of assistance,” Camacho said.

In the CNMI, he said an underground power distribution system will benefit the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp., the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport, Garapan, especially its commercial district, CNMI government offices, the Tinian Health Center and the Tinian International Airport.

The project will be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency which considers it “critically important,” Camacho said. (JBT)
