House panel seeks Saipan casino revenue information

THE House Ways and Means Committee has asked the Department of Finance and the Office of Management and Budget to provide the latest information about the Saipan casino gross revenue tax payments.

The committee chaired by Rep. Ivan Blanco brought up the issue during a meeting last week but since acting Finance Secretary David DLG Atalig said he did not have the numbers at the time. He said he would share the information with lawmakers once he obtained it.

In a follow-up letter to Atalig, acting Ways and Means Chairman Ralph N. Yumul said he wants to know the status of the Saipan casino gross revenue tax collections and if Imperial Pacific International is current in paying the taxes.

Yumul also wants to know the current balance in the casino GRT special account and if the administration is projecting a reduction in casino GRT collections in the current fiscal year.

In addition, the lawmaker is asking for records of any and all payments, fines or fees from IPI that were placed in government department accounts rather than the general fund.
