Community groups hold relief drive for Typhoon Wutip victims in FSM

VARIOUS community groups held a relief drive at the Garapan Fishing Base on Saturday for the Typhoon Wutip victims in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Several boxes of clothes and food were collected on the first day of the relief drive.

Rep. Ivan Blanco said his office, the Refaluwasch Advisory Association, the Pohnpei Association, the ACH CNMI-Chuuk Association, the Kosrae Association, the Yap Association, Carolinian Affairs Office, and office of Rep. Sheila Babauta organized the event to help the typhoon victims in Chuuk, Yap and Pohnpei.

Blanco said they wanted to reciprocate the FSM, which provided assistance to the CNMI in the aftermath of Typhoon Yutu.

The relief drive on Saturday started at 8 a.m. Blanco said they will continue collecting relief items until they fill up a container.

He said Yap, Chuuk and Pohnpei were badly damaged by Typhoon Wutip. Aside from houses and schools, the islands’ crops were also destroyed, he added.

“So we are also asking the community on Saipan for donations of seeds and any tools for farming,” Blanco added.

He encourages people to donate batteries and portable generators.

Blanco thanked Matson Inc. and McDonald’s for participating in the relief drive.
