Second Disability Sports Festival to be held on Saipan, Tinian and Rota

TO increase participation, the second annual CNMI Disability Sports Festival will be held on Saipan, Tinian and Rota, Public School System sports director Nick Gross said.

“But we are doing this on skeletal budget. We have roll-over funds from last year’s event,” he added.

“For the sustainability of the event, the organizing committee put this program together by collaborating with community agencies and securing intergovernmental support. Anybody that will be traveling to assist with the festival is essentially being covered by an individual agency,” Gross said.

He also thanked the Tinian Mayor’s Office and the Rota Mayor’s Office for their support.

There will be more events this year, including backyard games such as cornhole as well as adaptive kickball and adaptive dodgeball, Gross added.

They will retain boccia, which is the adaptive form of bocce, and adaptive softball which is designed for athletes with spinal cord injuries and lower extremity impairments.

Gross, who chairs the organizing committee, said the event is an opportunity for students and members of the community with physical and/or mental disabilities to learn about and participate in exciting sporting events.
