Saipan mayor: Presentation on oral cancer an ‘eye-opener’

SAIPAN Mayor David M. Apatang encouraged his staff members and field personnel to pass on to their family members and children the lessons they learned from a two-day presentation on oral cancer.

“Hopefully this will open up their eyes — even kids are chewing. The presentation is an eye-opener,” he added.

The presentation was very successful and was well-attended by his staff, the mayor said as he thanked Juan L. Babauta, executive director of the Commonwealth Cancer Association, for educating them about the dangers of chewing betel nut.

Apatang said his office will continue to support the oral cancer prevention program, adding that cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in the CNMI.

“I know there’s a lot of people who have oral cancer and are undergoing treatment,” he said.

Apatang said while he cannot stop his staff from chewing, “we don’t chew in the office, and we don’t chew in a government vehicle.”

The mayor encouraged other agencies that provide healthcare programs to conduct similar presentations for his staff.

“They are always welcome because I want to give my people the opportunity to learn how to stay healthy,” he said.

Apatang said he doesn’t chew betel nut and has talked to his staff about the consequences of chewing.

“One of our staff members have already passed on because of oral cancer,” he added.
