On Guam, 2 dozen school bus accidents in 2018

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — There were 24 school bus accidents in 2018 and as of April 2, 2019, there have been eight accidents, according to the Department of Public Works.

“There are financial impacts to our Bus Operations Division, but the DPW continues to be committed to ensuring that it achieves the mandate of providing safe and efficient bus operations for our schools,” according to a statement from the department.

Drug testing also takes place after any school bus accident, but DPW referred to the Department of Administration for testing results.

News of school bus crashes have made recent headlines. The department was also rocked by a drug scandal in 2017 after a school bus driver was arrested on drug charges.

Police arrested then-51-year-old Francis Dungca after a raid at the DPW compound in early June 2017. Management received a tip that initiated a drug sweep.

After pleading guilty, Dungca was sentenced to three years of jail time but was handed a suspended sentence that included 150 hours of community service in addition to attending recovery support groups and completing a drug or alcohol counseling program.

He completed the drug program in September 2018.
