Saipan delegation to confirm zoning board nominees

THE Saipan and Northern Islands Delegation is expected to confirm next week the appointments of former Indigenous Affairs Director Ignacio DLG Demapan and Joeten-Kiyu Public Library budget analyst Vincent P. Sablan to the zoning board.

The chairman of the delegation’s Judiciary & Governmental Operations Committee, Rep. Joel Camacho, said the comments made during the public hearing at 10 a.m. on Wednesday were all in favor of confirming the appointments of Demapan and Sablan.

In an interview, the delegation chairman, House Floor Leader John Paul P. Sablan, thanked Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios for appointing two new zoning board members.

He said Zoning Administrator Therese Ogumoro informed the delegation that there are about 12 applications and requests still pending because the board cannot take action due to the lack of quorum.

These re-zoning applications and requests, House Floor Leader Sablan said, involve new investors that the CNMI economy needs.

He noted that right now the zoning board has three members only — former Rep. Mario Taitano, Joe Ayuyu Jr. and Patrick Reyes.

Under the law, he said the board should have seven members and a quorum requires at least four members.

“So again, I thank the governor and lt. governor for making the board operational again,” he added.
