Humanities Council to host oral history workshop for high school students

TO reconnect the youth with their elders and island traditions, the Northern Marianas Humanities Council will host a two-day oral history workshop for high school students on April 26 and 27 at Saipan World Resort.

Humanities Council executive director Leo Pangelinan said oral historian Rlene Steffy will conduct the workshop for 40 students selected for the program.

After the workshop, Steffy will assist the participants in completing a project. “They have to do research and interview someone and apply the tools and skills they’ve learned to conduct an effective interview,” Pangelinan said.

“We want to get the youth interested in oral history because we severely lack a recorded medium of the history of our islands and our people,” Pangelinan added.

He believes that there is a gap in the community in terms of transmitted knowledge.

Oral history, he added, will allow the youth to learn their elder’ values and way of life.

“We need to document that so we can understand more of ourselves — who we are as a people. It helps to know that so we can determine where we want to go.”

Pangelinan said registration packets have already been sent to private and public schools. The selection of the students will depend on the school counselors’ recommendations and the interest of the students themselves. The deadline for submitting application forms is on April 22.
