CK memorial courtyard will be a visitor and research center

THE Leadership Memorial Courtyard in Chalan Kanoa will soon be operated as a visitor and research center which is its original purpose.

After Typhoon Soudelor damaged the Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council building in Aug. 2015, the courtyard became the council’s temporary office.

This year, the council will move to a new temporary office — the Saipan mayor’s office at the CTC Building near the Ada Gym track and field.

Municipal council office administrator Frances Muna said once they move out of the courtyard, “we will offer its operation and management to a vendor.”

The municipal council wants the courtyard to be self-sustaining and income-generating.

The $551,820 memorial courtyard project funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through Northern Marianas Housing Corp. aims to honor and recognize the contributions of the former and current leaders of Saipan and the Northern Islands.

After it opened in 2012, the municipal council started collecting and gathering documents, pictures, oral testimonies, personal items and souvenirs from previous elected officials that could be displayed at the administration office of the courtyard.
