Coast Guard team in NMI for annual recruitment program

A U.S. Coast Guard recruitment team headed by Lt. Christine T. Igisomar is on island for a week-long recruitment program.

Igisomar, a Saipan native, said the team is visiting all public high schools, Mount Carmel School and Grace Christian Academy.

“Recruiting is an ongoing process, and with continued interest from the CNMI, we hope to continue these annual trips,” she said.

The program has entered its third year on island, Igisomar said.

As of press time on Wednesday, the team had already processed five applicants.

She said they hope to send at least 10 applicants to the Coast Guard within the next year.

Igisomar’s team is using the conference room at the Saipan mayor’s office as temporary recruitment headquarters.

She said the mayors of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota have all been great supporters of the Coast Guard.

“[Saipan] Mayor [David] Apatang in particular knows full well the intense mission of a recruiter, as he was an Army recruiter himself,” Igisomar added.

Apatang said the recruitment program provides a good opportunity for young men and women who are interested in joining the Coast Guard.

Igisomar said they will also conduct similar recruitment program on Rota and Tinian.

On Friday, Igisomar said they will formally present Genzo Gonzales, a senior at Kagman High School, with his appointment to the Coast Guard Academy preparatory school.

They will also swear in Anthony Reyes, another senior at Kagman High School.

Besides Igisomar, the other members of the recruitment team are Lt. Freddy Hofschneider, a native of Tinian, and Petty Officer Angelo Pangelinan of Guam.

For those who have graduated high school, or would like more one-on-one time, the Coast Guard’s representatives will be available at the following municipal offices from 1 p.m. through 5 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

  • Saipan Mayor’s Office — April 22 to 26
  • Rota Mayor’s Office — April 29
  • Tinian Mayor’s Office — April 30
