As early as 6 a.m., participants, whose ages ranged from five to over 60 years old, started registering for the 5K run event.

Most of the participants are Agape Christian School students. “We were not required to join but we thought it was a good way to spend the day,” Agape student Ryzher Medina said.

The oldest participant was Hopwood Middle School teacher Chang Whan Jang, 67. He was the winner in the 55-and-over (male) category, completing the race at 19 minutes and 31 seconds.

A barefoot runner, Chang Whan Jang said it was his third time to join Run for Mom. “Joining events like this has always been my motivation to be physically active,” he added.

Kosuki Sato is another third-time participant of Run for Mom. He was the overall winner among males after clocking in 16 minutes and 57 seconds.

According to Sato, running is his therapy. “My wife and I have been running for five years now. Every day we run together and it also gives us an opportunity to talk and make plans.”
