SHEFA receives 1,258 applications for 2019 spring semester

SAIPAN Higher Education Financial Assistance program has 1,258 applicants for spring semester, including 235 new ones, program administrator Merissa Rasa said.

In her report to the SHEFA board headed by chairman Oscar M. Babauta, Rasa said as of May 9, 713 applications had been approved while 35 were pending approval.

Rasa said 510 applications have been denied due to incomplete documents or failure to meet all the requirements.

Of the total number of applicants, 934 are current recipients of the program and 89 are returning recipients.

Rasa said 347 applicants will study abroad, 803 will study on Saipan, 108 will pursue their studies through online schools and 42 are enrolled at the Northern Marianas Trades Institute.

This spring semester, 574 are college freshmen; 270, sophomores; 202, juniors; 86, seniors; 98 are in graduate or master’s degree program; and 28 are in advanced or doctorate/juris doctorate programs.

She said 45 applicants are taking a certificate course; 535, associate degree; 552, bachelor’s degree; 98, master’s degree; and 28, advances/doctorate degree.

Of the 1,258 applicants, 264 were high school graduates in 2018.
