Clyde Norita out; governor to name new fire chief

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres has withdrawn the re-appointment of Fire Commissioner Clyde K. Norita and will submit a new nomination to the Senate soon.

Saying that the Senate appointments committee did not have enough time to act on Norita’s nomination, the governor on Thursday said he would ask the outgoing fire chief to work for the administration in a different capacity.

Torres reappointed Norita on Feb. 18 but the nomination papers were still on the Senate president’s desk as of Thursday. The nomination will lapse on May 18.

Torres said the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services will have an acting commissioner starting May 17, Friday.

The governor said he had met with Norita and “we will be working on other opportunities within the administration.”

Torres said the appointment of a new fire chief “will be coming out in about a week or two.” He has not talked to anyone regarding the position, but “there are a few individuals who are interested.”

A former Department of Public Safety commissioner and House member, Norita was appointed by then-Gov. Eloy S. Inos in March 2015, and confirmed by the Senate as the CNMI’s first DFEMS commissioner in May 2015.
