CUC official: 3 of 114 wells affected by low water production

OF 114 water wells, only three have been affected by a low water production due to the drought conditions on Saipan, Commonwealth Utilities Corp. Executive Director Gary Camacho said on Friday.

This has resulted in a temporary water interruption in some areas, including Navy Hill and Chinatown, he added.

He said the deep wells are not getting the water that they normally do, adding that the surface water at Donni Spring, one of the water sources in Garapan, has dwindled.

“The 24-hour water services have been intermittent in some areas,” Camacho said.

As of Friday, however, he said the drought had a “minimal impact” on CUC’s water production.

CUC is still implementing scheduled water hours for the next several weeks until the approach of the rainy season in June.

“So we apologize to our consumers, but it’s obviously a source issue due to lack of rain,” Camacho said.

CUC, he added, is also evaluating the pipelines in the affected areas for possible leaks.

He urged the public to conserve water to prevent CUC water wells from running dry, and to also report leaks to the CUC Call Center at 664-4282.
