Saipan delegation panel OKs $190K spending measure

THE Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation’s Ways and Means Committee last week endorsed the passage of a local bill appropriating $190,000 in E-Gaming license revenue for various programs and activities.

Authored by Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao, House Local Bill 21-19 appropriates $75,000 for the Fourth of July-Liberation Day celebration; $30,000 for the Commonwealth Women’s Association; $10,000 for the 21st Oceania Customs Organization Conference; $15,000 for the Northern Islands Mayor’s Office; $10,000 for the 38th Flame Tree Arts Festival; and $50,000 for the legislative delegation’s operations.

The local bill originally allocated $268,888 in E-Gaming license revenue for Saipan, to include $33,000 requested by the Northern Marianas Athletics.

But the chairman of the delegation’s Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Ivan Blanco, said NMA must provide a justification for its funding request.

He added that they also reduced the funding request of the Saipan Mayor’s Office for the Liberation Day celebration from $100,000 to $75,000.

Blanco said Liberation Day Committee has other funding sources for the annual event.

The $20,000 that the Northern Islands Mayor’s Office requested was reduced to $15,000 while the $20,000 requested for the Flame Tree Arts Festival was reduced to $10,000.

The delegation is expected to act on the local appropriation bill in its session today, Tuesday.
