Miss Marianas candidate donates cash, shoes to 500 Sails and DYS

2019 Miss Marianas candidate Danielle Riane Capalad raised funds, which she donated to the Division of Youth Services and 500 Sails.

On Wednesday, DYS received 30 pairs of shoes from Capalad.

DYS Administrator Vivian Sablan thanked Capalad for reaching out to DYS.

“Riane approached us and asked us how she could help. I told her that one of our biggest challenges was getting footwear for the children,” she said. “When we remove kids from home, most of the time they don’t bring their stuff with them and we need to take care of their needs. We want to make sure the kids have proper clothing and footwear when they go to school.”

Capalad held a fundraising project called Super Hero Bento on April 29.

She partnered with Shirley’s Coffee Shop which prepared 550 meals to support her project. For every lunch box sold, $1 goes to DYS and 500 Sails’ water safety program, Dolphin Club Saipan.

Capalad was able to sell all 550 bentos and raised a total of $1,100.

“I really wanted to create a movement that focuses on the children, the island and its biodiversity,” she said.

“Super Hero Bento originally started from scratch. I posted a funny story on Instagram, ‘Go for 2, Support Taco!” After that, some people sent me messages saying they would buy my taco,” Capalad said. This gave her the idea for a fundraising project.

She chose 500 Sails as one of her beneficiaries because she admires its goal to restore the Marianas’ maritime traditions.

“I’m happy to use my time to help children, promote local culture and the conservation of the environment,” Capalad added.

This year’s Miss Marianas pageant will be held on June 15 at Fiesta Resort & Spa.
