PSS will not offer summer program this year, says official

DUE to the austerity measures implemented by the Public School System, Education Commissioner Glenn Muna on Monday said they will suspend the summer school program for this year.

“During summer, our kids have a lot of downtime. So we provide them opportunities to keep them busy to avoid regression when they move from one year to the next,” he said.

Although PSS is suspending its summer program, Muna said other agencies and community organizations are stepping in to offer enrichment summer programs. These include the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the 4H program under NMC-CREES, and the Division of Youth Services.

Last year, he said, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Carolinian Affairs Office offered cultural programs for children.

PSS, he added, will continue its summer feeding program which is federally funded. “We are still partnering with community organizations to help them feed the students that they serve.”
