NMI speech-debate team heads to Dallas for national competition

THE CNMI’s National Speech & Debate Association team left for Dallas, Texas on Saturday to participate in the national competition set for June 16 to 21.

As part of their preparation, the CNMI team held a showcase at American Memorial Park on June 8.

Harold Easton

Harold Easton, Western Pacific Region-NSDA president, said the showcase was an opportunity for the students to face a friendly crowd before they go to Dallas to compete.

“This is no small feat,” Easton said, referring to the national competition. “We are talking of five-digit participants here, including children from the mainland who are not new to the national competition.”

He said the CNMI team members are dedicated and he expects them to do a fantastic job in Dallas.

At the national level, he added, “there are literally thousands of students competing [yet] our students usually finish in the top 200, top 100, or top 50, and that means they are in the top percent of the nation.”

Easton added, “It would be wonderful if we have students finish first, second, third or fourth. But we should also appreciate those students who finish in the top percentage — that is no small feat.”
