ALFONSO S. Parongan, 57, will admit to stabbing to death his landlord over a rental dispute and seriously injuring her husband.

Alfonso S. Parongan

Parongan on Wednesday told the Superior Court through his defense lawyer that he will be changing his not-guilty plea to guilty.

Assistant Public Defender Jean Pierre Nogues represents Parongan while Assistant Attorney General Robert Charles Lee appeared for the government.

Parongan was charged with first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

Previously, Parongan pled not guilty for reason of insanity.

After hearing from both parties on Wednesday, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho ordered Parongan to return to court on June 26 for a change of plea hearing.

The judge previously set Parongan’s jury trial for Aug. 12 at 9 a.m.

According to the prosecution, Parongan stabbed Josefina Pineda, 53, and her husband Anthony Barit, 62, with a kitchen knife on Oct. 29, 2017. At the time, Pineda was trying to collect rent from the defendant.

Parongan told police that he was high on methamphetamine or “ice” and drunk on the night of the incident.
