MVA shuts down Korea office; seeks new marketing agency

THE Marianas Visitors Authority has terminated its contract with AVIAREPS and will announce a request for proposals for its promotional and public relations service in South Korea, the islands’ main tourism market.

At a special MVA board meeting on Tuesday, MVA Managing Director Priscilla Iakopo said they are looking into a two-year contract with an option to renew for an additional two-year period and an additional one-year period or up to five years at the sole discretion of MVA.

In interview, MVA board vice chair Gloria Cavanagh, who presided over the meeting, said the board decided to terminate the contract of AVIAREPS because “we weren’t satisfied with the performance.”

AVIAREPS’ contract would have expired on Sept. 30, 2020.

She said MVA has a contingency plan for promotions and marketing in South Korea while the RFP process for a new promoter is ongoing.

“We’re hoping that we can get proposals from interested parties before September,” she said.

Cavanagh said MVA has retained its representative offices in Taiwan, China and Japan but closed the office in Russia due to lack of direct flights.

“Whenever you don’t have a direct flight, it’s difficult to justify opening and leaving an office there especially with these austerity measures that are going on,” she added.

MVA retained its office in Taiwan because there are still connecting flights from that destination, she added.
