500 Sails gives sailing experience to 200 children

500 Sails has served more than 200 children by teaching them how to swim and letting them ride a canoe, 500 Sails co-founder and president Emma Perez said.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week, children from various summer camps visited the Guma Sakman as part of their activities.

Perez said children from 4-H Camp Maga’lahi learned how to swim and were given an introductory lesson on canoe sailing.

500 Sails also accommodated campers from Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, which runs a summer program themed “Universe of Stories.”

JKPL technical services librarian Beth Demapan said the children learned about traditional sailing and swimming, and they also enjoyed a canoe ride.

Perez said their own students at the canoe camp acted as sailing crew during the activities with the children.

She added that 500 Sails will provide the same opportunities to the children on Tinian. “We will stay there for a week, and teach children how to swim,” she said.
