Japanese TV shows feature the Marianas

(MVA) — The Marianas received extensive coverage on two Japan television shows last week following filming familiarization tours to the island earlier this year.

“Mira-Sieki Jipang” (Future Century Jipang), a national broadcast business information program on TV Tokyo, aired a 54-minute program titled “The Island that Japanese Have Forgotten” on Wednesday night (July 10) at 10 p.m. Highlighting modern tourism attractions and amenities, new air service by Skymark Airlines, and the historic ties between Japan and the Marianas, the program urged viewers to remember “Saipan, the island that we shouldn’t forget.”

The 2-hour “Human Observation Variety: Monitoring” aired Thursday (July 11) night at 8 p.m. on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting Station) and featured over 20 minutes on Saipan. The variety show observes the reaction of people to the unexpected. The program followed “Big Eater Three Sisters” — three women taking on strong men around the world in eating contests.

The Marianas segment highlighted professional food fighter Sachiyo Masubuchi competing in the J’s Fried Rice Eating Competition held as part of the Taste of the Marianas International Food Festival & Beer Garden in May 2019. The three “sisters” also challenged a local diving guide to finish a 9-lb. steak in less than an hour at Country House Restaurant.

The programs were filmed in April and May with the assistance of the Marianas Visitors Authority.

“Interest in the Marianas is increasing in Japan with the launch of direct charter service via Skymark Airlines from Tokyo,” said MVA Managing Director Priscilla M. Iakopo.

“In addition to this month’s television shows and digital advertising recently run at train stations in Tokyo, we have implemented several other marketing and promotions projects to help fill the additional nine charter flights planned for August and September. It is a very welcome boost from the Japan market.”

Skymark will operate nine charter flights from Tokyo Narita International Airport to the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport in August and September. The flights will depart Narita daily on Aug. 9-14 and Sept. 20-22.
