Kantan Isla to be held in October

KANTAN Isla, a concert that celebrates Chamorro and Carolinian musical heritage, will be held this October, Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture folk arts coordinator Gloriana Teuira said.

She said the Marianas Music Association, the event’s lead organizer, will announce the exact date and venue.

The Arts Council will oversee the logistics and administration of the event, she added.

The annual Kantan Isla concert was first held in 1998, organized by the Chamorro and Carolinian Language and Policy Commission.

The last concert was held in 2004, but it was revived by the Arts Council in 2017 and held at the Garapan Fishing Base. Most of the participating local musicians were members of the Marianas Music Association.

Last year’s concert was canceled after Typhoon Yutu slammed into Saipan and Tinian in Oct. 2018.

In an earlier interview, Arts Council Executive Director Parker Yobei said their goal is to promote the Chamorro and Carolinian languages.

All the performers of Kantan Isla are encouraged to sing at least one song in Chamorro or Carolinian.
