CUC: Rota now has sufficient power production

NOW that the “grounding issue” of the newly delivered used 1.8-megawatt Cummins generator has been fixed, Rota’s power plant is producing 1.4 megawatts with 3.8 megawatts in reserve capacity, CUC Executive Director Gary Camacho said on Thursday.

The production is “good” so it allows CUC to rotate the maintenance of the generators, he added.

All issues regarding the Cummins generator have been corrected since last week, he said, adding that Rota also has a brand new 1.8-megawatt Caterpillar generator.

“It was a CUC matter and is now resolved,” Camacho said. CUC personnel from Saipan and Rota worked with the engineering team to address the issue, he added.

Camacho said the contractual responsibilities of International Bridge & Construction Marianas Inc., which delivered the $690,000 Cummins generator on June 2, will end on Aug. 7.

With the significant improvement in CUC Rota’s power generation, he said Rota Resort & Country Club has expressed interest in connecting to the CUC grid.

The hotel produces its own power supply.

“Rota Resort wants to become a customer and I respect their interest,” Camacho said.

Amid a power crisis on Rota, CUC signed a six-month contract with Rota Resort in January. If needed, the hotel would supply CUC Rota with power at a base rate of 19 cents per kilowatt hour.

Camacho said there’s now no need to continue the contract.
