Over 600 trees planted by MINA, government agencies

THE Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance, through its partnership with multiple government agencies, has planted over 600 trees on Saipan and Tinian, MINA executive director Roberta Guerrero said.

“Bring Back the Trees,” she added, is also the theme of MINA’s Green Gala set for Sept. 13, 2019.

She said they started planting trees in May in collaboration with the Division of Forestry, the Division of Parks and Recreation, the mayors, and Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Services.

The goal is to replace the trees uprooted by Typhoon Soudelor in 2015 and Typhoon Yutu in 2018.

“We wanted to plant 300 trees. But based on the sapling and seedlings we received from donors, we have exceeded the goal. And we will be doing more planting throughout the year,” Guerrero said.

The tree planting program was also made possible with the help of community members and group of students, she added. “People hear about it and they call us saying they have a group that is willing to help.”

For this year’s Green Gala, Guerrero said they will highlight the tree-planting program

On Wednesday, Marianas Variety donated $3,000 to the annual event.

“The gala will have a full buffet dinner,” Guerrero said. “We will have a raffle and silent auction. The grand prize for the raffle is an economy class ticket to any United Airlines flight, whether to Asia, the U.S. mainland, the Caribbean, Mexico or Canada,” she added.

“We really appreciate the community for always supporting us. The gala is our major fundraiser event. It’s how we raise funds for our operational expenses to continue our mission.”

A ticket to the Green Gala costs $75. For more information, email minaoutreach@gmail.com.
